Andrew Otero Obituary, Maryland, MD
The sudden passing of beloved former Severn School mathematics teacher Andrew Otero has left the Severna Park community in deep mourning. Known for his “luminous spirit,” Andrew’s unexpected death has shocked students and faculty alike. He was a teacher who not only made math come to life but also guided his students through some of their toughest moments.
Andrew, who collapsed unexpectedly, was known for his work as the AP Calculus and AP Computer Science teacher. He had the unique ability to make complex topics like derivatives feel understandable, and he had a knack for building confidence in students who doubted their abilities. His students remember him as someone who made them believe in themselves, even when they thought they couldn’t succeed.
Before becoming a teacher, Andrew had already led an extraordinary life. At 17, he enlisted in the Marines, where he served for five years, including a special assignment at the White House during President Obama’s term. After his service, Andrew became the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a degree in applied mathematics from Towson University.
At Severn, he wasn’t just a teacher—he was everywhere. He was the Grade Dean for the Class of 2025, advising them through the ups and downs of high school. He also played a crucial role in supporting the LGBTQ+ community through his work with United Spectrum, and he coached the Track & Field team. In addition, Andrew was involved in many behind-the-scenes efforts, including serving on the school’s Steering Committee and co-chairing the finance section of their accreditation process.
What set Andrew apart was his unyielding dedication to his students and his school. He stayed after class to offer extra help, attended his students’ games and performances, and always made it clear that their success was personal to him. He left behind a wife, children, and countless students who will never forget the impact he had on their lives.
Severn School feels his absence deeply. His students and colleagues now face the difficult task of filling the void left by a man who gave so much of himself to others. While no one can truly replace Andrew, his example of kindness, dedication, and selflessness will continue to inspire those who knew him.
